Dawes Device...... Types and Fitment
The Dawes Device is basically a spring loaded valve, that is used to control air flow to the Turbos actuator.In doing this the boost pressure going to the engine can be increased or decreased as desired.It should also be noted that it can be used on a standard car aswell as a modified car, the main benefit been a faster spool up time of the turbo.I`m running the Dawes in conjunction with the P.E. ECU which allows me to run higher boost than is obtainable with the standard ECU.
One thing to be aware of : Be very careful while using the Dawes Device.Too much boost pressure and your car WILL run lean and WILL blow up! Always adjust in small increments at a time, and where possible have the car`s CO and emissions checked on a Rolling Road.An air/fuel ratio meter and knock sensor are also highly recommended.Below are the basic fitting instructions on how to fit the Dawes to the Evo6.

Heres
a picture of the Dawes in situ, its only temperary here, until i get the battery
relocation kit fitted, upon which time i`ll move it to a better position.Its
really simple to fit.If you look at the picture below this one, you`ll see the
actuator and nipple from the intercooler feed pipe.Remove all the original pipework
from these two(one pipe from each, joined with a plastic T piece, which then
connects to the standard boost controller).Leave the boost controller connected
elctrically though, otherwise the ECU will log errors. Remember to bung up the
pipe from the boost controller to the airbox.
The lower connections.The pipe from the intercooler feed pipe (the lower nipple) fastens onto the bottom of the Dawes Device, then the pipe coming away from the top of the Dawes Device connects to the turbos actuator.The pressure from the feed pipe lifts the ball up in the Dawes, and allows pressure to pass through to the actuator, so opening it at the desired pressure. |
These are the same nipples from below. Its a lot easier to access these from below, and there's less chance of getting burnt on any hot parts.Keep the pipes as short as is practical, as this will give more accurate boost control and also help prevent boost spikes.

Having been using the standard Dawes Device for a few months, and been very impressed by its performace, i eventually decided to upgrade to the "Race" version.
Two things prompted this.Firstly the standard Dawes refuses to hold boost at 1.5bar in forth, and drops to 1.4bar at around 115mph.Secondly the "Race" version claims to react .3 second faster, and as such helps to prevent boost spikes that much quicker.Once i`ve fully tested the two back to back i`ll post the results.

As can be seen, both are very similar, so similar in fact they *appear* to the naked eye to be actually the same, all be it apart from the material that the all important ball is made out of.
The standard Dawes uses a steel ball bearing.The Race versions utilises what i can only describe as a lighter ball, though i cannot make my mind up what it`s actually made of.Looks and feels like a marble, only lighter. Either way, it`s a bloody expensive little thing, lets hope its worth it! ;)

***UPDATE*** Well i`ve done a fair few miles now, at first the race version was working simular to the normal one, in forth at 115mph it was dropping back from 1.5bar to 1.4bar.
However, after a hundred miles or so, it is now (or was.... more tests later will prove it for definate) holding 1.5bar all the way to 115mph an more, again in 4th gear.
At 140mph in 5th and holding a nice steady 1.5bar too Have to say i didnt do a very highspeed run taking much notice of what the standard dawes was doing so cannot compare here t.b.h!
